Contest! Prizes! Win!

Fame! Glory! Adven... ah, you get the idea.

Here's what you have to do: Post a comment on this blog entry explaining who your favorite female protagonist in literature is. Yes, comic books count.

Dr. Christine Myers and I will sift through the entries and decide which 15 are the most cleverest. The winners will receive the envy and admiration and respect of many important people. And more impressive, an autographed copy of "From the Depths." Autographed by the author, even!

So get thinkin'. The deadline for entries is Dec. 25, and all entries must include a working e-mail address (but don't worry, they won't be published. The only people who will see them are me and the CIA). Good luck!

Without a doubt my favorite protagonist in literature is Scout Finch (from To Kill a Mockingbird, but you knew that). She is the quintessential younger sibling and someone I probably subconsciously modeled myself after. She manages to be fiercely independent yet totally loyal; this dichotomy is the key to her strength of character and makes her all the more difficult to emulate.

I like Eve Dallas from J.D. Robb's In Death series. She's smart, she's funny, she cares for the victims whose murders she solves, she's tough but she is also vulnerable. Not only that she is married to and totally loved by the sexiest and richest man on and off planet! :)

My favorite female in literature would be Hermione of harry potter series. She is strong and always finding ways to keep Harry and his wizard friends on the right side of the law.

My favorite character? Hmmm...this is a very difficult one. I will mention three-all for the same reasons. These female characters are strong women with very tragic pasts. They have overcome much pain and destruction and yet, they still believe in the greater good. These women do not allow anybody to walk all over them and if anybody even thinks about it...well then, they are dead meat. *L* Yes, these women are not to be messed with! *L*

Favorite characters are:

Eve Dallas, J. D. Robb
Kathleen Mallory, Carol O'Connell
Anita Blake, Laurell K. Hamilton

Happy Holidays!!!

Hugs,

Maithe

So many to choose from, so why is my mind a total blank?! Although I agree that Eve Dallas is a wonderful character, I have to go back to my childhood heroine. Eilowny in the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander made such a mark on me as a child and I find no less of one as an adult. Not only an orphan but survived Achren and her evilness with a continued mischievous twinkle and humor. She can be tough when its demanded, never turning away from a fight. She has a great intuition for things, not only finding the sword Dyrnwyn but destroying the castle in the process. Certain she prattles on alot but she's still young. Can you imagine what a great lady she will turn out to be? In the end standing with the one she loves forsaking eternal life. My heart broke at the end of their journey as it does each and every time I read that set of books, feeling as if I've lost my best friends. Kim

No contest...Miss Marple/Agatha Christie. Always solves her case, has character/scruples.

This may cause some disagreement, but my favorite female protagonist is Scarlett O'Hara. If one reads the book, you find a women who is caught up in situations completely beyond anything she was ever prepared to face. Yet she faces each with a determination to help those she loves, and protect the lifestyle that she knows. She works in the garden to feed her family, she delivers a baby, she runs a lumber mill; she always does whatever is necessary.

My favorite protagonist is Honor Harrington in the series by David Weber. She's tough, honorable and she can kick butt.

Such a tough choice. But I have to go with Maggi Sanger from the Grail Keeper series of books by Evelyn Vaughn. "Who?" I hear you asking. Maggi is a truly modern woman, yet her character evolves to embody that of the ancient warrior women while still living fully in this modern world. She believes her strength lies in her scientific approach to the world--only that which can be proved is true. Until she begins to understand the role that the mystical can have in this day and age after being pulled into the search for ancient goddess grails. Think "The Da Vinci Code" with a female lead, even more conspiracies, and much more romance (what story couldn't use a sexy billionaire). I see in women today the essence of Maggi, searching for something to fulfill their lives but never sure what it should be.

My favorite female protagonist is Stephanie Plum from the Janet Evanovich series about her as a bounty hunter. I have read or listen on audio the whole series up to now. Am anxiously awaiting book 14.

Ok I've recently met the character of Melanie Vargas in the series by Michele Martinez. I like her. Oh and I like Stephanie Plum too--very entertaining but.....my most favorite of all time has got to be Elizabeth Bennett from Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. I love her intelligence, her humor and most of all her stubbornness. Let's just say that Elizabeth made sophomoe English extremely fun! I have yet to forget her.

Ahhh, there is but one: Clarice Starling. Just overcoming a name like "Clarise Starling" is enough -- though it may be the key that led to her grit, to her courage, to her sass, to her downright cockiness with just the right touch of vulnerability. Though I must admit that the movie portrayal by Jodie Foster (with whom I've always been deeply in love and, yes, my wife of 36 years knows it) might play an important part of my selection. (And, Gerry, good luck with the book...haven't read it...yet!...but will. Excited...for this book and the many to follow.)

I am going to have to go with Evey Hammond from "V for Vendetta". First of all it is one of the greatest comics ever written (and the movie held up surprisingly well) and it is one of the few books I have ever read that has a female at the center.

Also since I already sleep with an autographed copy of From the Depths under my pillow, I will be donating my winnings to charity. Does anyone know if an organization that supports displaced North Korean naval officers?

My favorite is Jo March from Little Women. She was a very strong female and followed her dream to the end no matter what.

What a great question! There are so many possibilities it's difficult to choose. I'm going to name Pyanfur Chanur from CJ Cherryh's Chanur Saga. Pyanfur is a lion-woman in a culture where women are the leaders. She captains a starship, navigates through interspecies politics & is fiercely devoted to her family. She's brave, smart, witty, emotional & altogether unique.
